David Deblinger Is Returning!

“ORGANIC” ACTING INTENSIVE with David Deblinger
Adults (advanced and beginners) SATURDAY October 4th 3-9pm (6hrs): $75

This workshop brings together participants of varied experience. For those returning students the work will delve more deeply into scene work and auditioning skills, as well as the bringing in of a scene or monologue, which has been worked on previously. However, in general, the day will still reveal great acting as springing from honest, spontaneous behavior… it will focus on building trust within oneself in an environment of support, encouraging participants, no matter what level, to take personal risks.  The group will engage in a variety of ensemble-building activities and exercises including sharing personal stories and improvisation. David will use exercises he has honed over three decades, designed to illicit authentic, personal work for stage, television and film.

TEEN ACTING INTENSIVE
SATURDAY October 4th 10am-2pm (4hrs): $65

David Deblinger’s Ensemble Force teen acting intensive does more than teach about the craft of acting.  It serves to give young people a chance to take the risk of expressing themselves, before their peers and others, in ways they never have before.  An immersion in theater-based activities enriches cognitive, rational abilities by exercising creative and intuitive ones.  The work facilitates social and emotional learning by engaging both the collective, and the individual. The process involves exploration and understanding, on a gut level, a set of given circumstances that help shape a particular character’s unique perspective. Personal storytelling work offers a chance at public speaking, while making the connection between remembered experiences and the act of writing.  In all, the workshop is loads of fun, while empowering each teen toward higher self esteem in an environment where great value is given, not just to speaking, but listening as well.

CREATING WORK FOR THE STAGE OR SCREEN
SUNDAY October 5th 11am-5pm: $75

This workshop, for both mature teens as well as adults, is about creating work based on your own stories, real or imagined. Ensemble building activities will play a role in creating an environment where people feel comfortable enough to share stories that hold meaning for them. Then the group will collaborate, taking steps to create new works (e.g. a solo show, a play, a web series, a film) to be shown on either a stage or screen. The day will go from ensemble building, to developing ideas both through improvisation and writing exercises… then building scenes and monologues to fit the given format. Each person will be asked to have, on hand, a cell phone that shoots video.

We are limiting these workshops to 10 students. So please RSVP – ASAP to reserve a spot.

About David Deblinger…

This past August, using his ensemble building process, David directed and developed a piece called, Play the Moment, with a group of young artists that was performed at the Lucille Lortel Theater. This was under the auspices of New York’s award winning company, The New Group.

“David has an extraordinary ability to create a trusting, fully creative environment with a group of strangers, and to guide sharing in the safest way possible. With the students at our theatre, he created an ensemble in a few short weeks, one that allowed deeply personal artistic expression that neither the students nor their parents knew they were capable of.”

Ian Morgan- Associate Artistic Director- The New Group

In 1992, David co-founded what is now the internationally renowned Labyrinth Theater Company, where he has been blessed to work closely with some of this country’s greatest actors, writers and directors. (e.g. Philip Seymour Hoffman, John Patrick Shanley, Bobby Cannavale, Stephen Adly Guirgis and a host of others)  David co-wrote Labyrinth’s original mission and established an aesthetic emphasizing his ensemble concept.  He conceived two successful programs for Labyrinth based on this concept: The Ensemble Workshop and the Intensive Ensemble.

Through the years David has engaged groups of all different ages and backgrounds. His own skills as an actor and performance artist are essential in eliciting laughter and pathos, and in setting a tone and defining stakes for others to do the same.

David is also an award winning actor, writer and filmmaker.  On television he recently shot guest starring roles for “Blue Bloods,” on CBS and “Broad City,” on Comedy Central. He has also appeared on “The Sopranos,” “Sex in the City,” “Law and Order,” “SVU,” and “Damages,” among others.  He has enjoyed a long career acting on film and stage in New York and around the country, collaborating with luminaries like Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ellen Burstyn, John Patrick Shanley, Sam Rockwell, Alan Alda, Julia Roberts, Christopher Walken. Robert Patinson, and many others.

David is the winner of the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship award as a video artist and directed the award winning short film, “The Callback,” starring Sam Rockwell.  He has also has acted in films produced by Martin Scorsese and Dustin Hoffman.

— Stephen Adly Guirgis (Tony nominated playwright of The Motherfucker with the Hat, currently creating new series on the birth of Hip Hop for Netflix)

“I had the privilege of working with David on three different shows.  And in the course of those shows I found him to be an astonishing actor, filled with bravery, creativity and unexpected choices that kept the room spinning like a top.”
— John Patrick Shanley (Oscar, Tony and Pulitzer Prize winning writer-director..author of Doubt, Moonstruck and the current Tony Nominated, “Outside Mullingar”)

“Working with David was fluid, soulful, egalitarian, loving, powerful, gentle, non competitive, spiritual, deeply human and yet connected to something larger, to each other.”
— Cady McLain (Emmy award winning actress)

“From the first moment I met David Deblinger I was moved and inspired by his passion and commitment to the power of theatre to transform, heal, and reveal. His experience with actors and non-actors has given him the ability to invite, dare, and prompt each person he works with to embrace their own stories and feelings as their gift to share and magnify as theatre, as art.”
— Rainer Judd (Actress and President of The Judd Foundation)

“Your workshop was one of the most amazing and fulfilling experiences I’ve ever had.”
— Marisa Lowe (Actress)

“I was immediately taken in by David’s charismatic nature and sense of humor. More than that, his wealth of knowledge in the art form feeds his ability to quickly engage the student to develop a deeper sense of trust and willingness to open up and share on a very deep, visceral platform. You want to rise to his limitless energy level.”
— Mark Gorham (Actor)
